WOMEN OF MARLOW | Amber Baker
Welcome to our ‘Women of Marlow’ blog - a series where we interview like-minded women and friends of Marlow.
In this refreshingly honest and style-rich conversation, we catch up with Amber Baker as she navigates life with her newest family addition, Penelope. We talk about how becoming a Mum of two has reshaped her approach to dressing and self-expression in her day-to-day wardrobe. From postpartum fashion shifts to Pinterest-worthy moments, colour theory to kindy drop-offs, she shares the pieces grounding her right now, the women inspiring her, and her thoughtful advice for embracing identity, creativity, and grace in motherhood. Plus, her current Marlow must-haves that are carrying her stylishly through the season.
You recently welcomed the beautiful Penelope to your family. How has this new chapter influenced the way you approach your wardrobe?
Little P’s arrival has brought me back down to earth. The bright whites and lighter palette pieces hang next to my sexier power pieces like ancient archives in the back of my wardrobe… for now, not forever! I guess you could say my new approach is practical, but pretty.
You’ve always expressed so much creativity through your wardrobe. How would you describe your style right now in this current season?
Honestly, my style is all over the show but I’m not mad about it. Some days it’s very mom-core, other days it looks like I’ve walked right out of a Pinterest board. But one thing that’s become consistent when I’m styling each day is colour and shape. I’ve embraced my colour analysis theory thanks to my new BFF, ChatGPT. I’m really leaning into caramels, espresso blacks and chocolates. Shape wise, I’m finding looser silhouettes with some light tailoring helps me feel happy in my own skin - being six months postpartum I’m keeping things covered, nobody needs another jumpscare in 2025.
What pieces are you currently reaching for the most, the ones that make you feel good and grounded during your day-to-day?
Right now, I’m feeling things that can take me from kindy drop-off to a brunch meeting. I love a good loungewear look that can be elevated with accessories. Oversized tees with cashmere, denims (with a little give), a fair few layers with winters chill, and admittedly, a hat to hide the postpartum hair...
Has becoming a Mum of two changed the way you approach getting dressed - in terms of practicality, comfort or self-expression?
Absolutely. After my first baby, I felt great physically. This time around there has been zero capacity for prioritising self-care so instead of just throwing on something and knowing it looks good, I really take my time before leaving in the morning. I still have confidence in trying new things but now when I finally get ‘that fit’ my wardrobe floor looks like an episode of Hoarders.
Where do you draw inspiration from these days?
In terms of fashion, I still tend to follow what works for me and sparks joy rather than seek out inspo as such. I do, however, love seeing what the effortless and minimal Scandinavian women wear in their everyday life. But I also enjoy observing the very opposite end of the spectrum, someone like Grace Ghanem (in her 60s, the legend) and how she challenges the status quo. She’s a great reminder for us all not to take fashion so seriously.
What advice would you give to other women navigating motherhood, self-identity or creativity?
Wow, this is a YUGE question… I have so many answers but not enough page space. I feel like I’ve lived two very different realities after both babies in terms of finding myself and finding love for life and creativity again. The first time I resisted motherhood and tried to desperately retain my OG identity purely out of survival, but this time I’ve completely embraced motherhood and love that it’s a big chunk of who I am now. I think most importantly, give yourself grace and do what feels right. Everyone's experience is so unique and no one knows you or what you need to feel good, better than you do yourself.
What Marlow pieces are you currently loving?
Everything they have in my tonal colours of browns and caramels, like the Montana Wrap Coat as well as the cashmere, of course! The Hazelnut colourway is such a great staple. How great to have such high quality cashmere pieces so much more accessible? And the washed silk look loungewear Orbit pants - you feel so cosy and relaxed, but pop on a power heel and they become ceo-worthy.
